GB1099 Woodruff Key

GB/T 1099 Woodruff Key is a standard mechanical connection component in the shape of a half-moon (also known as "moon-shaped key"), mainly used to transmit torque between the shaft and the hub (such as gears, pulley wheels, couplings, etc.) to achieve circumferential fixation of both. Its working surface is two parallel planes on both sides, which fit with the side of the key groove; the bottom surface is an arc surface, which fits with the arc-shaped bottom surface of the key groove on the shaft. This structure enables the semi-circular key to have the ability to automatically center during assembly, especially suitable for occasions with high alignment requirements or where there are small assembly deviations, and is widely used in various small and medium-sized transmission equipment.

The Woodruff Key, with its unique curved bottom surface, can generate slight self-adaptive oscillation within the shaft groove, automatically compensating for minor angular misalignments between the hub keyway and the shaft keyway. This feature effectively increases assembly tolerance and reduces the requirements for precision machining and alignment.

Thanks to its design that directly transmits torque through two parallel working surfaces, the semicircular key ensures uniform axial force distribution during operation, preventing radial eccentricity between the shaft and hub during rotation. It is particularly suitable for precision applications where high concentricity in power transmission is required.

However, since installing a semicircular key requires a relatively deep keyway on the shaft—typically nearly equal to the key's height—it significantly reduces the shaft's bending and torsional section modulus. Therefore, this structure is primarily designed for transmitting medium to small torques or used as an auxiliary key to share loads in large-scale drive systems.

Additionally, the curved bottom surface of the key can achieve good surface contact with the external conical surface of a tapered shaft, making it especially well-suited for installation on conical shaft extensions such as motor taper shafts, ensuring reliable torque transmission and axial positioning.
