The flat-tail self-tapping screw has a flat tail, not a pointed one. You can see the difference by comparing a pointed-tail self-tapping screw with a flat-tail one - the pointed-tail one has a tapered point at the end, while the flat-tail one has a flat head, with at most a slight chamfer. Just this slight difference leads to different applications.

The flat-tail type does not drill, but requires you to pre-drill a base hole in the workpiece before screwing it in. It may sound like an extra step, but the flat-tail type has its advantages - after being fully tightened, there won't be a sharp point protruding from the back of the workpiece. If you've ever taken apart a remote control or small appliance, you'll know that some screws, once tightened through, will protrude with a small sharp point on the back, which can interfere with other components when installing the casing. The flat-tail type doesn't have this issue, as the back remains flat.

Flat tail without protruding tip: After being fully tightened, the back is flat, unlike the pointed tail which protrudes a small tip. In thin plates, plastic shells, and tight spaces inside, using a flat tail will not push against other parts.
