What are carriage bolts used for?

Carriage bolts, also known as coach bolts, belong to the category of threaded fasteners employed to securely join two pieces of metal or wood. They feature a distinctively domed head and a square-shaped shoulder just beneath the head, designed to prevent the bolt from rotating within its hole.

Carriage bolts find extensive use in situations where the bolt head will be concealed once installed, and a smooth, rounded aesthetic is desired. This makes them particularly popular in woodworking applications, such as affixing wood to metal frames, attaching wooden handrails to walls, and assembling outdoor furniture. To install a carriage bolt, a hole is drilled through both pieces of material to be joined, and the bolt is inserted from one side. The square shoulder of the bolt is then embedded into the wood or material to prevent it from spinning, and a washer and nut are affixed to the threaded end on the opposite side to complete the assembly.
